Charlotte Brontë was and probably still is the most famous of the Brontë family (although Emily and Anne are starting to get their fair share of the fame). We have the most info and work from Charlotte and for several reasons. First she was the eldest of the four children surviving to adulthood. Second, it became a passion of Charlotte's to become a published artist and to acquire an amount of fame. Thirdly because she lived 6 years longer than her other siblings, creating more work in that time. Also after her death her husband, Arthur Bell Nicholls, kept almost all of her possessions, even though not very carefully, as the famous 'pillar portrait' of the three sisters and the fragment of Emily from the 'Gun Portrait' were both found on top of a wardrobe. It was Mr. Nicholls who tore Emily's likeness from the portrait, thinking that hers was the only true likeness, what a shame. And lastly, and probably the most important factor of Charlotte's fame, is her biography, written by her good friend Mrs. Elizabeth Gaskell, published 2 years after Charlotte's death. This biography created a fascination with the Brontë's, Charlotte especially, and it caused quite a stir for many reasons. This however started the crazed Brontë collectors to hoard up anything that they could lay their hands only, spreading Brontë relics across Britain and America. A lot of these relics have come back to rest in their original home place. Check out these links to see more about Charlotte, her literary works, her artworks, and the modern day associations with her.
