Except for the last few years of his life, when he most certainly gave in to a dependency on alcohol, Branwell seems to have lived a happy and cheerful and productive life. Winifred Gerin, in her biography of Branwell, states that he is more like the character of Gilbert Markham, than Mr. Hungtingdon. And Juliet Barker (author of 'The Brontes') discovered that Anne began writing this novel after a visit to the Parsonage by a Mrs. Collins whose sad tale inspired the creation of Helen Graham; the scoundrel-husband Mr. Collins being the inspiration for Mr. Huntingdon. Could it be that this idea that Mr. Huntingdon is modeled after Branwell is all just part of the Bronte Myth??
